In some cases, your child may require a pulpotomy, often referred to as pulp therapy, in order to repair your child’s smile. Dr. Renn, Dr. Brett, Dr. Tate and our associates can use this procedure to improve the health of your child’s teeth.
What is Pulp Therapy?
Pulp therapy is a crucial treatment for saving children’s primary (baby) teeth when decay or injury reaches the tooth’s pulp. The pulp is the innermost layer of the tooth, containing nerves and blood vessels. When this area becomes compromised due to decay or trauma, children may experience significant pain, sensitivity and, if untreated, risk infection or abscess. To prevent further damage and maintain the tooth’s function, pediatric dentists often recommend pulp therapy, also known as a pulpotomy or pulpectomy.
The Pulp Therapy Process
A pulpotomy involves removing the damaged or infected portion of the pulp from the crown of the tooth while leaving the healthy pulp in the roots intact. After removal, the area is cleaned, disinfected and sealed to prevent further infection. A dental crown, often stainless steel for durability, is typically placed over the treated tooth to protect it and restore function. Pulpotomies are commonly performed on primary teeth to preserve the tooth until it is naturally lost and replaced by a permanent tooth.
A pulpectomy, on the other hand, is a more comprehensive treatment and is used when the infection has spread deeper into the tooth’s root canals. In this procedure, all of the pulp is removed, the canals are cleaned and disinfected, and then filled with a biocompatible material. The tooth is then restored with a crown to ensure its long-term functionality.
